Ballina councillors approve raising of loan for Clúid scheme

The elected members of Mayo County Council from Ballina approved the raising of a loan of €12.9 million for the provision of a 66-unit housing development in St Patrick’s Estate in Ballina by Clúid Housing Association. Senior executive officer Paul Benson outlined to the members the reason for the raising of this loan. He told the members that the council would raise the loan and hand the money over to Clúid for the scheme, but the council would be reimbursed fully by central government the amount of the loan and any charges that were applied on it. He also informed the members that the tendering process was well under way for the project and that he was still confident that work would be under way on the scheme before the summer.

New approach to waste collection can save money - Cllr Aengus O'Rourke

At the September meeting of Athlone Town Council, Councillor Aengus O'Rourke asked the council executive to examine the cost implications for the council if it were to withdraw completely from providing a commercial and domestic waste collection service. At the meeting on Monday evening Cllr O’Rourke said, “This council currently provides a waste collection service to homes and businesses in the Athlone area at a significant loss to this council. The cost of running the service for 2009 will be approximately €813,000 and the projected income from the sale of the bin tags will be in the region of €500,000. The simple maths is that the council is set to lose in excess of €300,000 to operate the service.”

Castlebar councillors claim only they can extinguish right of way

The proposed closure of three level crossings in Straide by Irish Rail will not go ahead if the members of the Castlebar electoral area committee have their way. Irish Rail have applied for and been given planning permission by Mayo County Council to carry out works on three crossings known as XX31, XX32 and XX33. The rail company have also been given permission to carry out remedial works at a bridge in the area, to deepen the underpass of the bridge which they envisage being used as the only access route over or under the railway lines. The works at the bridge will see the road being deepened by three and half foot to ease access. However, the councillors maintain that having this bridge as the only crossing of the rail line is totally unacceptable as the bridge is a danger already and is prone to flooding at the moment and this will only get worse if the road is lowered a few more feet.
